Italy -- the new Britain? The decline of England to a near-mercy position has seen a corresponding resorgimiento of Italy. With England no longer able to play its traditional balancing role on the continent, could Italy be performing that function in the future? Isolated by the Swiss in the north, essentially an island, and without territorial aspirations, the new Italy seems ideal to play the role. The question mark is whether King Umberto's diplomacy, recently dealt a blow by his war cabinet, is up to the task.
